Overview

Ambrose Library has an opening for one part-time Student Library Assistant for the upcoming Fall 2025 and Winter 2026 academic semesters. The contract will start sometime during the week of August 25 (date depends on availability of applicant to work training shifts) and will end April 30, 2026. The weekly schedule will depend on library staffing needs and the availability of applicant(s); however, please note when you are considering applying that Student Library Assistants typically work weekday evenings (4-9 pm) and Saturdays (11 am – 5 pm).

Student Library Assistants typically:
– Answer in person, email, and over-the-phone questions
– Check out and return books, process hold requests
– Help students learn and utilize the library’s resources (search for & find books, articles, etc.)
– Maintain an atmosphere conducive to study for library patrons
– Shelve books, process new books
– Carry out opening/closing library procedures
– Perform any other duties as determined by Library Staff

To succeed in the job, Student Library Assistants:
– Act with integrity: We deal with personal data, so understanding and respect for confidentiality is a “must have”.
– Pay attention to detail: This job is very detail-oriented, so consistency in the little things is important.
– Communicate effectively: Working with patrons can be both challenging and rewarding – conveying information clearly is very important in this role.
– Are time efficient & a self-starter: Student Library Assistants often complete tasks unsupervised, so efficient use of time and the ability to take initiative are expected.

Experience required:
– At least one semester of study at Ambrose University.
– No direct library experience is necessary as training will be provided.
– Experience in a customer service environment will be considered an asset.
– Working knowledge of the library’s catalogue and databases will be considered an asset.

Additional Information:
– Employment is contingent upon satisfactory criminal background check.
– Candidates must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
