The Able Sail Association of Alberta (ASAA) is looking for summer staff from May – August/September. Our summer staff are typically College or University Students who love the outdoors and working with people. At the ASAA, there is lots of room for you to contribute your creativity to enhance our Programs and Services.

Desirable Skills:
Must be a team player, with excellent planning and organizing abilities. Must be a self-starter and be able to work independently. Will be required to ensure sailing companions and volunteers are qualified. Will coordinate activities, be safety minded, follow procedures, have a high energy level and be computer literate. Sailing experience is not required but would be valuable. Experience working with people with disabilities would be beneficial.
Our positions are partially funded through the Canada Summer Jobs Grant, therefore applicants must fit within the eligibility criteria of the grant.
General Job Description:
The Recreational Activities Coordinator, under the direction of the Business Manager and the ASAA Board of Directors, oversees the day-to-day operation of recreational sailing programs for disabled children and adults in Calgary. All staff are required to have completed a Police Check and Vulnerable Sector Check.
The Recreational Activities Coordinator:
- Must be a team player, with excellent planning and organization
- Must be a self-starter and be able to work independently
- Works collaboratively with other staff members and ensures a positive public image of contribution to the community
- Will coordinate activities, be safety minded, follow procedures, and have a positive attitude
- Ensures our fleet is in clean and presentable order and provides support and coordination for maintenance requirements
- Able to be outside for long periods of time
- Experience working with people with disabilities would be considered beneficial.
- Sailing experience is considered an asset
This position requires physical exertion on a daily basis and deals with mechanical equipment. Individuals are required to be in good health and fit, able and willing to deal with boats, trailers, and other equipment and be able to safely lift reasonable loads, including assisting people with transfers. ASAA values good judgment, awareness of disabilities, exceptional customer service, commitment to team-work, flexibility, initiative and the ability to work safely and independently. This position requires being outside on the dock or in the boatyard for long periods of time. Sometimes it may be required to accompany clients and a sailing companion on the boat. All staff will undergo CANSail training in partnership with the Glenmore Sailing School upon job start, as well as specific training with the ASAA adaptive boats and equipment.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Follow the lead/direction of the Business Manager and the ASAA Board
- Managing bookings, phone communication with customers
- Receiving payments (cash, cheques, e-transfers) from clients and maintaining an accurate and up to date record of transactions
- Ensure proper waivers and paperwork are filled out and filed
- Coordinating volunteers, tracking volunteer hours and maintaining accurate and up to date records
- Rigging / de rigging (preparing) and trailering boats
- Assisting clients
- Being an environmental steward
- Maintaining an accurate and up to date contact list of ASAA’s community partners and individual members
- Contributing in events promoting the ASAA
- Making purchases for the club if required
- Ensuring safety procedures are followed
- Ensuring housekeeping is being done
- Organizing and maintaining facility
- Assist in managing and updating Social Media accounts and creating new content
- Help plan and execute events for the ASAA
This position will start in May, prior to our projected program start date in June. Applicants will be required to have a valid class 5 Driver’s License and undergo a Police and Vulnerable Sector Check. Pay is $18/hour.

We provide adaptive boats and equipment for individuals with disabilities in order for them to participate in the rehabilitative benefits of sailing and engage with the sailing community in Alberta.
